RS-485, also known as TIA-485(-A), EIA-485, is a standard defining the electrical characteristics of drivers and receivers for use in serial communications systems. What is Modbus?
Modbus is a serial communications protocol originally published by Modicon (now Schneider Electric) in 1979 for use with its programmable logic controllers (PLCs). Modbus has become a de facto standardcommunication protocol and is now a commonly available means of connecting industrial electronic devices.[1] The main reasons for the use of Modbus in the industrial environment are:
- developed with industrial applications in mind,
- openly published and royalty-free,
- easy to deploy and maintain,
- moves raw bits or words without placing many restrictions on vendors.
Modbus enables communication among many devices connected to the same network, for example, a system that measures temperature and humidity and communicates the results to a computer. Modbus is often used to connect a supervisory computer with a remote terminal unit (RTU) in supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems. Many of the data types are named from its use in driving relays: a single-bit physical output is called a coil, and a single-bit physical input is called a discrete input or a contact.
The development and update of Modbus protocols has been managed by the Modbus Organization[2] since April 2004, when Schneider Electric transferred rights to that organization.[3] The Modbus Organization is an association of users and suppliers of Modbus-compliant devices that advocates for the continued use of the technology.[4]

Specifically, Modbus has been a standard for interfacing remote I/O and PLCs into the process DLC system for over 20 years, allowing most legacy control systems to interface easily with Modbus.

Honeywell N2 Protocol for Variable Frequency Drives
First, the N2 communications protocol is used by Johnson Controls and others to connect terminal unit controllers to supervisory controllers. Indeed, it is open to any manufacturer and based upon a simple ASCII protocol widely used in the process control industry.
To emphasize, 1X Technologies 24 AWG 1PR RS-485 Cable is used in Honeywell N2 Protocol in VFD systems. Additionally, in your Honeywell “Connections & Communications” call out on page 7 in section 3.1 they call out for our RS-485 Cable stating Belden 9841 or Similar. Namely, our RS-485 cable is used as the “Transfer Cable” in the VFD System.
What is a VFD?
A variable-frequency drive (VFD; also termed adjustable-frequency drive, “variable-voltage/variable-frequency (VVVF) drive”, variable speed drive, AC drive, micro drive or inverter drive) is a type of adjustable-speed drive used in electro-mechanical drive systems to control AC motor speed and torque by varying motor input frequency and voltage.[1][2][3][4]
VFDs are used in applications ranging from small appliances to large compressors. About 25% of the world’s electrical energy is consumed by electric motors in industrial applications, which can be more efficient when using VFDs in centrifugal load service;[5] however, VFDs’ global market penetration for all applications is relatively small.
Over the last four decades, power electronics technology has reduced VFD cost and size and has improved performance through advances in semiconductor switching devices, drive topologies, simulation and control techniques, and control hardware and software.
VFDs are made in a number of different low- and medium-voltage AC-AC and DC-AC topologies.
How does a VFD work?
First, Variable Frequency AC Drive, or VFD, is the Converter.
The converter is comprised of six diodes, which are similar to check valves used in plumbing systems.
They allow current to flow in only one direction; the direction shown by the arrow in the diode symbol.
For example, whenever A-phase voltage (voltage is similar to pressure in plumbing systems) is more positive than B or C phase voltages, then that diode will open and allow current to flow.
When B-phase becomes more positive than A-phase, then the B-phase diode will open and the A-phase diode will close.
The same is true for the 3 diodes on the negative side of the bus. Thus, we get six current “pulses” as each diode opens and closes. This is called a “six-pulse VFD”, which is the standard configuration for current Variable Frequency Drives.
Installation guide for Belden 9841 or similar RS-485 cable
First, the Honeywell N2 Protocol installation guide gives these key steps. In detail, these steps are to prepare and install your Belden 9841 Cable or equal. Furthermore, please refer to the installation guide itself when performing the work as it has helpful photos.
Step 1:
First, Open the cover of the AC drive. Next, The relay outputs and other I/O-terminals may have a dangerous control voltage present even when the drive is disconnected from mains.
Step 2:
First, locate the components that you will need on the AC drive to connect and run the N2 cables.
Step 3:
Next, Strip about 15 mm of the N2 cable (see specification on page 7) and cut off the gray cable shield (meaning strip the jacket). Remember to do this for both bus cables (except for the last device). Additionally, Leave no more than 10 mm of the cable outside the terminal block and strip the cables at about 5 mm to fit in the terminals. Furthermore, Also strip the cable now at such a distance from the terminal that you can fix it to the frame with the grounding clamp. Strip the cable at a maximum length of 15 mm inches. Remember, do not strip the aluminum cable shield! Additionally, Please refer to the Honeywell N2 Protocol for additional information.
Step 4:
Next, connect the cable to its appropriate terminals on AC drive standard terminal block, terminals A and B (A = negative, B = positive).
Step 5:
Chiefly, using the cable clamp included in the delivery of the drive, ground the shield of the RS485 cable to the frame of the AC drive.
Step 6:
Remember, If the drive is the last device on the bus, the bus termination must be set. Specifically, locate the DIP switches to the right of the control keypad of the drive. Next, turn the switch for the RS485 bus termination resistor to position ON. Because Biasing is built in the termination resistor.
Step 7:
In fact, unless already done for the other control cables, cut free the opening on the AC drive cover for the RS485 cable (protection class IP21).
Step 8:
Next, Remount the AC drive cover and run the RS485 cables as shown in the picture. Remember, when planning the cable runs, remember to keep the distance between the Fieldbus cable and the motor cable at a minimum of 30 cm.
Step 9:
To clarify, the bus termination must be set for the first and the last device of the Fieldbus line. See picture below. See also step 6 on page 11. Additionally, we recommend that the first device on the bus and, thus, terminated was the Master device.
