What is the NEC Electrical Color Code for Colored Electrical Wire & Cable Colors? (For the Electrical Pro’s!)

(NEC) Electrical Color code: Currently, the (NEC) National Electrical Code in the United States does not contain a required color code for voltage marking on wire & cable. Additionally, the NEC does not contain color code requirement for ungrounded conductors, except 110.15 requires the high-leg conductor from a 120/240 4-wire delta-connected system to be identified with the color orange. The grounded (neutral) conductors must be identified with the color white or gray in accordance with 200.6 and equipment grounding (bonding) conductors must be bare, or identified in the color green, or green with a yellow stripe if insulated in accordance with 250.119.

• The electrical industry standard for wiring colors for 208/120V (A) black wire, (B) red wire, (C) blue wire, and grounded/neutral white wire; 
• The electrical industry standard for wiring colors for 480/277V (A) brown, (B) orange, (C) yellow and grounded/neutral gray. 

Wire & Cable Manufacturers may mark the outer jacket of the colored electrical wire or cable to identify the conductor colors inside the cable based on the number of conductors in the cable. For example, a Thirty-wire, multiwire branch circuit colored electrical wire may be marked with all of the associated colors while a two-wire branch circuit may be marked as blue and white for 120V or yellow and gray for 277V.

Wire Color Code Chart / Colour code of electric wire

Wire Color codes are used to identify electrical conductors for point-to-point wiring and for circuit diagrams. The Insulated Cable Engineers Association (ICEA) outlines the color code in Standard S-73-532 in Annex E. The Standard breaks down the color code into methods of circuit identification. The most common wire coloring methods used are Method 1, 3, and 4. After the Method is selected then the assembly of colored wire conductors must follow a color sequence from the tables with Table 1 and 2 being the most common.

Methods of Circuit Color Identification for Colored Electrical Wire:

Method 1 – Colored Wire Compounds 
This colored electrical wire method uses base color of insulation and uses tracers (striped wire) when needed, in accordance with Table 1 or 2.  Base colors may be obtained by suitable color coatings applied to the insulation or jacket surface or by colored insulation or jacket compound.  Tracers shall be colored stripes or bands marked on the surface of the insulation or jacket in such a manner as to afford distinctive circuit coding throughout the length of each wire. Tracers may be continuous or broken lines, such as a series of dots or dashes, and shall be applied longitudinally, annularly, spirally, or in other distinctive patterns.

National Electrical Code (NEC) 

The NEC specifies that conductors colored white are to be used only as grounded conductors and that conductors colored green or green/yellow be used only as grounding conductors and that neither white nor green be used in any manner on ungrounded conductors. Tables 2 provide color sequences that do not include white or green conductors. If grounded or grounding conductors, or both, are used in the cable, they shall be colored white or green respectively and inserted as the second or third, or both, designated conductor in the first sequence of circuit identification only. Where these colored electrical wire conductors are required, they shall be specified.

Method 3 – Neutral or Single-color Compounds with Surface Printing of Numbers and Color Designations or Only Color Designations

This colored electrical wire method uses single-color insulation with printed conductor numbers and color designations or only color designations, in accordance with Table 1 or 2. These colored electrical wire combinations shall be repeated in regular sequence as necessary.

For example, using Table 2 for a cable with 3 conductors:

1 -Black     or Black Wire     

2 – Red     or Red Wire    

3 – Blue     or Blue Wire 

Method 4 – Neutral or Single-color Compounds with Surface Printing of Numbers (Control Cable Only)

This method uses single-colored electrical wire insulation, with each conductor numbered in sequence by surface printing, beginning with the number.
